On The New Media

Posted on: October 28, 2010

I think I get about 75 percent of my news from ‘alternative’ news sources (eg. podcasts, blogs, forums, certain Comedy Central shows etc.).   Not necessarily the most reliable source of news but after some fact checking I think I am able to separate fact from BS most of the time.  It’s an interesting feature of our time that the internet has essentially democratized our access to information. But what is really interesting about this is the reaction of the “old” media to this new community of bloggers and commenters.  There is just something about their constant attempts to stay relevent (ie. creating Facebook pages and Twitter accounts) that seems so uncomfortable and unnatural. Like dressing a dog in a stupid Halloween costume. Basically, their switch from providing the public with investigative, contextualized journalism to reporting the latest happenings has cemented them as not much more than souvenirs of the previous generation, well, in my mind at least. Happily, a new suite of bloggers have filled the void with knowledgable, insightful commentary. If traditional news organizations want to survive the age of the new media, they should go back to the basics.
